I honestly could not have been more excited to hear that "The Powerpuff Girls" were not only getting a fourth member but that she'd be black. To put it into perspective I'm a few months shy of 22 and the first episode aired in 1998. That's like almost 18 full years of fandom. I'm pretty sure you could find my old Powerpuff Girls sheets hidden somewhere in my childhood home. NOW YOU'RE TELLING ME THAT INSTEAD OF PRETENDING I AM BLOSSOM I CAN BE BLISS?! Obsessed is putting it lightly.
I was more than a little annoyed when I read some of the unnecessary criticism she got. One article in particular from Izetta Nicole of blacknerdproblems.com was the definition of overanalyzing. In her own words, "I've got pass another Black woman on the street give a head nod and smile in the key of 'what the hell kinda white nonsense is this' feelings. Here we go again feelings. I've got the 'why can't we live' blues over this sh*t..." Just a little bit over dramatic if you ask me. I'm not going to say that her reasoning was completely off I just don't think it's that deep.
I mean she went in on the fact that homegirl had hips and the other three did not. Could it be the creators are hyper-sexualizing black adolescence? Possibly, but what makes more sense to me is she's a teenager and the other three are still children. Apparently, Bliss also had daddy issues because she ran away but how else would you describe her absence from classic PPG. Maybe I could see that more if it were the other way around and the professor left her. Bliss was the stereotypical "angry black girl" according to Izetta. On the show, Bliss is really emotional and it ties into her disappearance. To make a long story short when she's angry things do blow up, but things go boom regardless of her emotions. When you really think about it, Bliss isn't the only character playing into stereotypes. Bubbles is a dumb blonde and Buttercup has short black hair and is a
The point I'm trying to make is that let's not write off Bliss just yet. I'm going to be watching and I am going to be a little more critical going forward but at the end of the day, no one was questioning the fact that there wasn't already a black PPG. I for one am excited that my two nieces get to grow up in a world were one exists and you should be too.
