First off, there are WAY more important things going on like Net Neutrality, the GOP tax reform, the new, new (new) Muslim Ban, and etc. that you all should go read up on, but since you’re already here let’s talk about my least favorite Kardashian, Kylie Jenner. Kylie Cosmetics is set to debut a brand new line of concealers that feature 30 diverse and inclusive shades. They will be released on December 13th along with her bullet lipsticks that I'm not gonna buy.
Any one of my family members, college roommates, or best friends will tell you that I LOVE makeup, so I have to admit when I first saw the picture I was impressed. Kylie Jenner still can’t collect my coins because at the end of the day she’s gotten it wrong so many other times. She is the literal definition of a culture vulture, but so is Drake. As a WOC, I quite simply cannot, but good for her for showing us brown skinned queens some love.
Since the Kardashian/Jenner Klan can’t breathe or say boo without Black Twitter calling them out for cultural appropriation it wasn’t long until the news ended up on my social media feeds. Many made comparisons to Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty line, saying that she was copying the artist. I 100% agree though I don’t see why that’s necessarily a bad thing. In fact, despite popular opinion Fenty Beauty is not the first makeup brand to produce a diverse and inclusive line of foundations or concealers. It was easily the most successful but that was because Rihanna made it a point to challenge mainstream beauty and makeup ideals that favor lighter skin tones. That and she is in fact, Rihanna.
What Kylie Jenner is doing is very smart, just not genuine. I doubt Kylie’s concealers would have went passed a warm tan if not for Rihanna’s success. The fact that Kylie “copied” Rihanna is kind of the point. Rihanna showed everyone that it was possible. When it comes down to the numbers at the end of the day black women spend the most money out of every other group on beauty products. Diversity and inclusivity are what we asked for so Kylie gave it to us. Trust me, I look for every reason to hate her and the rest of her family but this is not one of them. It wouldn’t really make any sense especially when we preach about representation in media and popular culture.
Despite all of this though, again if you are a WOC just think twice about who you throw your bills at. I can’t recall one time Kylie Jenner has been an advocate or ally for the black community. I’m not one to preach about how we should only support black owned business, BUT Fenty Beauty tho...
